The Governor Girls faced one of their toughest tests of the season on the road Friday night against a 7-win Yankton Gazelle team as they come down the final stretch of the regular season. The girls, off to arguably their best start in program history at 9-0, came in knowing if they wanted to have homefield advantage in the postseason, they’d need a win in Yankton.
The game started with a one-on-one opportunity for the Gazelles when Iyana Becker got behind the Governors defense and softly rattled the post with a shot. After that, the game evened out pretty consistently.
In the 35th minute, Lexie Hillmer found the net with a gorgeous top-shelf finish to make it 1-0. That shot that Hillmer has worked tirelessly on to perfect would prove to be the difference as the Governor girls would hold Yankton scoreless and win it by that final score. The girls now sit at 10-0-0 and will host Sturgis for their final home regular season game on Tuesday of next week.
In the boys game, it was one of the most entertaining scoreless draws you will see at the high school level. Both teams traded blows and opportunities for the entire 80 minutes. Jacoby LaRoche had two scoring looks from about 35-yards out that both came within inches of giving the Govs the lead. One that went just barely above the crossbar and one that was deflected by the Bucks goaltender that rang the bottom of the crossbar, bounced off the goal line and ricocheted the Yankton direction.
As the physicality picked up late in the second half, the scoring chances followed suit. Both teams throwing numbers forward just could not piece together the passes to find the go ahead goal and the game would finish 0-0.
