Porter Hunsley touched the football six times on offense and scored five touchdowns and also added an interception to lead the Pierre Governors to a resounding 55-14 victory over fourth ranked Watertown Friday night. After the Govs were stopped on their opening possession, Hunsley picked off a Kaeden Himmerich pass deep in Arrow territory to set Pierre up at the 9-yard line, from where he promptly ran in the first of his scores for a 7-0 lead on the next play. Pierre’s next drive ended in a brilliant fingertip catch for a 39-yard Carter Shiefelbein touchdown reception from Jerren Deal and a 13-0 lead, a catch made more impressive given the constant drizzly, wet conditions of the evening.
A 61-yard romp by Deal and a 10-yard pass from Deal to Hunsley had the Governors up 27-0 early in the second quarter. The Arrows found the end zone then with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Gage Robison followed by a fumble recovery and a quick 21-yard run from Lincoln Schutt, and suddenly it was 27-14. But Pierre responded quickly with two more Hunsley scoring runs, including one with just 15 seconds left in the half for a 41-14 halftime lead. Hunsley added his fifth score on Pierre’s first possession of the second half and Thomas Snyder also scored from five yards out in the third quarter for the final score of the night.
Mercy rule timing applied through the fourth quarter as the second string received playing time for the fourth time in as many games. Though they didn’t score, the Pierre JV’s did force and recover two fumbles to contribute to another Governor win. Pierre racked up over 460 yards of offense and held the Arrows under 200 total. Deal threw for 246 and ran for 130, scoring three times in all, and Schiefelbein caught seven passes for 115 including the highlight catch for a score. Watertown fell to 2-2 with the loss and will head to Yankton next Friday while the Governors play their Homecoming game against #2 Tea Area in their first of three straight home games upcoming. Kickoff will be at 7:00 with the pregame at 6:25 on RIVER 92-7 and video coverage at https://drgnews.com/river.
