The Governors as a program faced arguably their toughest test of the year as they went on the road to Aberdeen to take on the Golden Eagles Thursday evening. The boys coming in with an 8-1-2 record while the Aberdeen Central girls held a 9-2 record before the contest. For the Governors, wins were needed for separate reasons. The boys came in sitting 15th in the standings and are trying to hold onto their playoff spot late in the regular season. The girls who came in with an undefeated, 11-0 record trying to battle for the one-seed come postseason time.
The girls would be handed their first loss of the year after a defensive first half saw no goals between two of the state’s best. Aberdeen Central would peck away and score two late goals in the final 21 minutes of the match to go on and win 2-0. Emlyn Swanson faced a lot of shots in net, making 7 saves, but the Golden Eagles would hand the number two team in the state their first shutout of the year. It was also the first time the Governor girls had trailed all year and also the first time they have allowed more than one goal in a match in 2026.
In the boys game, the Governor boys would see a similar outcome, falling 3-0 in their match. However, they earned valuable seed points leading up to this match after two wins and a tie in their last three.
As it stands now, the Governor boys have not fallen in the standings and still sit firmly at 15. For the girls, they too currently sit firm in second place in the AA standings behind Harrisburg, who will be their next opponent come Tuesday.
Both boys and girls teams will travel to Harrisburg to close out the regular season. The Lady Tigers sit atop the standings with a 12-0-1 record, their only blemish coming in a scoreless draw to Yankton, a team Pierre beat on the road a few games ago. For the boys, they too will have a tough test with the Tigers who sit at 6-5-2. Those matches will be played Tuesday afternoon and then both will wait to see where they sit in the Class AA playoff bracket.
