Norm was born on October 4, 1933, in Andover, South Dakota, to Anerth and Anne (Halpin) Widvey. He was raised in Andover and graduated from high school there before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed 15 months in France.
Following his military service, he moved to Rapid City and attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
Norm later moved to Pierre, where he began working in the Planning Department for the South Dakota Department of Transportation. In Pierre is where he met and married Janette Elaine (Erikson) Widvey on November 11, 1961, at Faith Lutheran Church. Their marriage spanned nearly 65 years, during which they built a life and family together. While working at the DOT, Norm started building houses on the side, a passion that eventually became his full-time career as a carpenter. Over the years, he proudly built many homes in the Pierre community. Ever entrepreneurial, he later owned and operated local businesses, first selling waterbeds and later satellite systems, traveling all around the region to install them. In his later years, he found fulfillment working on the road, delivering pharmaceuticals to pharmacies across western South Dakota.
Norm loved living on the prairie. He enjoyed going camping, especially in the Black Hills at Nemo campground. He enjoyed music, and above all, he loved listening to his wife sing and play the piano. Norm was a man of quiet, personal faith who will be remembered for his strong work ethic and his quiet dedication to his family.
