Mellette County, S.D.- A Rapid City woman has died from injuries sustained in a vehicle‑versus‑pedestrian crash that occurred September 23 in White River, South Dakota.
Preliminary crash information indicates that 23-year-old Nikki Thin Elk was walking south on U.S. 83 in the middle of the road. At the same time, 37-year-old Julio Ernesto Alonso Torres of Grand Island Nebraska, was traveling southbound in a 2016 Dodge Ram 3500 on U.S. 83 hauling a flatbed trailer. Alonso Torres attempted to brake and swerved when he saw Thin Elk. The Dodge struck Thin Elk. She was taken to a Rosebud hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation is ongoing. All information released is preliminary.
