The Chamberlain Cubs went on the road Friday with hopes of snapping a two game win streak, and reverting back to how they started the season when they opened up the year with three straight wins.
The start of the game looked promising for the Cubs when they struck in an instant with a two-play, 71-yard touchdown drive that was started and finished on the legs of Brylee Brennan. It seemed like the Cubs would be able to keep the pedal down, but Hot Springs answered back with a lengthy 7-play drive that would result in a touchdown and bring the score within one.
Hunter Kunz wasn’t done after his first touchdown in the first quarter, scoring another touchdown early in the second quarter to make it 14-8 Hot Springs.
In the closing minute of the first half, Chamberlain jumped back out in front with a Brody Nielan 9-yard scamper that was capped off with a successful two-point try on behalf of Austin Rose. After the 13-play drive, Chamberlain carried a 16-14 lead into the half.
After a slow start to the second half, Hot Springs regained the lead on a 34-yard touchdown run from Ryder Weiss. Just when it felt like Chamberlain would answer right back, Hot Springs scored again to open the fourth quarter to make it 27-16. That would be the final score of the ballgame as Hot Springs would hold on for the upset and move to 2-4 while the Cubs dropped to 3-3 on the year.
Chamberlain will go to Mt. Vernon-Plankinton next week with hopes of snapping a now three-game losing streak, Hot Springs will host Douglas Friday night.
