After both faced mercy-rule losses a week ago, both the Stanley County Buffaloes and the Gregory Gorillas looked to get off the mat and bounce back with a win Friday night. It was a game that both coaches felt like would be the most evenly matched contest of their respective seasons, thus making it a toss up as to who could be leaving with the win.
After a punt on the first offensive possession for the Buffaloes, they would find paydirt on their second drive after a 39-yard touchdown reception from Jace Hand putting the Buffaloes up 6-0 early.
After a few stalled drives and a couple turnovers both ways, the Gorillas got the benefit of a crazy bounce that fell into the waiting hands of Avery Sengelmann which he would catch and stumble in for a Gorilla score. A Wyatt Beck two-point conversion would make it 8-6 to close out the first half scoring.
To open the second half, Carson Bourne scuffled a beautiful onside kick that found a bit of open space within the Gorillas special teams unit allowing Jeff Knight to recover and steal a possession for the Stanley County offense. A few plays later, offensive guard turned tight end Jacob Meyer would exploit a busted coverage up the middle of the Gregory defense for a 41-yard catch and run that got Stanley County to the 1-yard line. After a few more following plays, Witt Meyers would pound it in from three yards out to make it a 12-8 Buffalo lead.
After more stout Buffalo defense, the offense would run the same play to Jacob Meyer and it would offer the same result. Another great catch and run bu the big man put Stanley County inside the five yard line and would be followed by another Buffalo score. This time, it was Jack Deal on 4th and goal that was on the receiving end of the pass to put the Buffaloes up 10.
After Joe Malm reeled in his second interception of the night, the Buffaloes would put the nail in the coffin on a Bryant Zeeb six-yard scamper that would make the final score 24-8.
Not only did Meyer have the two biggest receptions of the game, he also registered four sacks and multiple tackles for loss earning him the Player of the Game honors.
The Buffaloes move to 2-4 with the win and will return home next week to face Platte-Geddes. Gregory falls to 1-5 and will take on Corsica-Stickney next week.
