PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Governors kept their unbeaten season going Friday night as they rolled to a 45-14 home win over Huron. The win marked a milestone for head coach Steve Steele who earned his 100th career victory, against just 24 losses, since taking over the Governor program in 2016. The Govs have played in the last nine State 11AA Championship games, winning eight, and are the odds-on favorite to repeat again this season. Pierre started the game with an 11-play scoring drive ending in a Jerren Deal 1-yard run on fourth down for a 7-0 lead. Huron marched down the field on their opening drive, but Tucker Swenson intercepted an Anderson Porisch pass at the goal line to keep the Tigers off the board.
The Governors then added a 34-yard catch and run by Carter Shiefelbein on the first play of the second quarter to make it 14-0. Huron scored on their second opportunity as Porsich hit Neil Salmen from 19 yards out to make it 14-8 after a successful 2-point conversion. But Pierre responded with a long kickoff return which led to a Porter Hunsley score from 11 yards. The Govs earned one more chance before halftime and scored on the last play of the first half when Deal found Hudson Stoeser over the middle. Stoeser somehow weaved his way through traffic for a crazy 29-yard touchdown and a 28-8 lead. Pierre’s defense was staunch in the second half forcing three straight punts, which led to good field position each time.
Third quarter scores from Cooper Terwilliger and Shiefelbein and a 44-yard field goal from Carter Templeton padded the lead before Huron scored on a short TD pass late for the 45-14 final. Deal had another efficient game, completing 16 of 19 tosses for 285 yards. Schiefelbein caught six passes for 93 yards and two end zone trips. Huron slips to 3-3 with the loss and will head to Sturgis next Friday, while the Govs complete a 3-game homestand hosting Spearfish. Coverage of that game will begin at 6:25 Friday on RIVER 92-7 FM with video streaming available at https://drgnews.com/river.
