The Pierre Governor girls soccer program went on the road to Harrisburg a year ago as heavy underdogs in their state semi-final matchup with the Lady Tigers. To many, they had overachieved in making it to that point in the postseason. The girls would fall 1-0 on a cold, rain-soaked night away from home, however, right then and there the Governors knew that loss was going to be a building block of sorts to carry them into the next season.
Even with a roster that doesn’t hold a single senior, the Govs put “State Championship” on their goal board to begin the year. Looking to use that experience gained from a year ago, the girls rattled off 11-straight victories. In those wins, the Govs defense did not allow more than one goal in any of those matches. Their back-line has been stingy, and goalkeeper Emlyn Swanson has been a proverbial brick wall.
Finishing the regular season 11-1-1, the Governors earned the #1 seed and homefield advantage. If they were to make it to the final game of the year, the road to the state championship would roll through the PILC. They would dispose of Rapid City Central by a final score of 5-0 on the back of a 4-goal performance from Aubrey Fischer. In the quarter-finals, it would require penalty kicks to send home the Brookings Bobcats. Today is their final box to check to achieve that goal of punching their ticket to the championship game.
They will welcome in the O’Gorman Lady Knights, a team they interestingly did not face in the regular season. O’Gorman poses a unique threat to Pierre in the fact that they have a very organized and aggressive midfield paired with a fast attack. The only time the Governors really “struggled” in 2026 was against Aberdeen Central, a match they lost 2-0. The Lady Knights just ended the Aberdeen Central season with a 3-0 dominant performance, so this matchup will require the Governors to play equally as organized and force them to limit mistakes. It is hard to imagine a more exciting game could unfold than Saturday’s PK thriller, however, that is the expectation for today’s semi-final match at the PILC.
Coverage will begin at 3:30 PM CT on River 92.7 with the first whistle sounding at 4:00 PM. You can also watch this match live on www.DRGnews.com/river/.
