Mass of Christian Burial for Rose Barton, 98, of Mobridge will be at 10 AM, Monday, December 7, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mobridge. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Rose passed away Friday, November 27, 2020, at Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.
Rose Barton was born on July 4, 1922, in Bowdle, SD to George and Lena (Hauck) Blondo. She attended school in Bowdle. In 1938 she came to Mobridge and worked as a waitress. Rose married Ellsworth Al Barton in Camas, OR, in 1954. Al was a heavy equipment salesman so they lived in many different places including Washington, California, Oklahoma, and Idaho. Following Al’s death in 1967 at the age of 55 Rose moved back to Mobridge where she has since resided. While in Mobridge Rose owned a clothing store on Main Street called the Fashionette with her niece Judy Martin. Rose was a perfect fit for the clothing store as she took pride in her appearance, always wearing beautiful jewelry and perfectly manicured long fingernails.
Rose enjoyed entertaining family, especially at Thanksgiving, and was known for her fried chicken, country gravy and nine-layer salad. She also loved the turkey neck and often made gizzards with noodles. Because she was born on the 4th of the July, she loved celebrating her birthday. It was a great excuse for our family to gather after the parade to continue the festivities of her birthday usually ending with the Rodeo’s firework display.
Rose was very social and enjoyed spending time with friends. She and her girlfriends were known as the Golden Girls and would socialize with popcorn and a drink at the Moose, Palace Lounge or the American Legion. She loved playing cards and was a familiar face at the Senior Center on Wednesday afternoons.
Rose was a strong lady who worked hard on her family farm until she left home at 16. She supported herself until she was married and then always worked to support her family. She was widowed early and lost both of her children in less than a year but her faith remained strong. She was very sharp until the time of her death. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mobridge and was active in the Altar Society.
Rose is survived by her grandchildren, Eric (Nicki) Martinez and Randy (Kourtney) Martinez, 5 great grandchildren, Emily and Eric Martinez, Sidney and Baylee Wharton, and Marley Patcher, 3 great great grandchildren, Barbara, Alice and Anna, daughter-in-law, Kim Norris, son-in-law, Rick Martinez, stepdaughter, Patricia Barton, 2 step grandchildren, Lisa Hanson and Michelle Furlott, 2 step great grandchildren, sister, Catherine Luckhurst of Mobridge.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Bruce Barton, daughter, Barbara Martinez, 6 brothers, and 5 sisters.
