Mark H. Weisbeck, Sr. was born December 9, 1934 to John E. and Theresa (Weinzirl) Weisbeck. They lived northwest of Herreid in a very run-down home. All water was hauled in 50 gallon drums for half a mile. Mark loved to drive the Ford tractor on those water runs. He enjoyed his “Popular Mechanics” magazine which ignited his imagination of how to build and make things. One of his projects was then to build an outdoor shower! He graduated from Herreid High School in 1952. He began his service in the United States Army from 1957 thru 1960. Love of his country was evident in his conversations.
Mark enjoyed attending dances at the Strasburg Blue Room where he met Esther Mattern. They were married June 11, 1958. At this time the smell and love of the land was indeed in his blood. He loved to restore and paint machinery. He ran out of old tractors on the farm so his attention shifted to restoring an old hay rack. He was currently in the process of dis-assembling and sandblasting the running gear for the hay rack that had been on the farm for many years.
He enjoyed his many hours spent attending farm shows. He was active in NFO (National Farmer’s Organization), Herreid Jaycees and President of the Senior Citizens. Mark was chairman of the Campbell County Crop Improvement Association and a board member of the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association. Mark kept very busy with the Weisbeck Seed Farm business. Countless hours were spent roguing the grain fields. He enjoyed exhibiting his grain varieties at SDSU Little International, in Brookings, SD winning many awards and trophies. It was obvious ALL his work was done with preciseness and perfection.
God blessed Mark with amazing musical talent. He never took a music lesson. He was proud of his 40 plus years as a cantor and member of the St. Michaels church choir. His polka band, “Mark Weisbeck and his Orchestra” entertained many people at dances and weddings. Mark also entertained during many family get-togethers. Love of his accordion was enjoyed throughout his entire life.
On Christmas Day he enjoyed a wonderful dinner, a nap followed by “two” bowls of ice cream and many phone conversations with family. He went to meet Our Lord peacefully during his sleep.
Mark will be deeply missed by his wife of 62 years, Esther; his children, Sheila (Myron) Brandner, Paul (Jeanne) Weisbeck, Bob (Karen) Weisbeck, Mark, Jr. (Lisa) Weisbeck and Suzanne (Jeff) Hamilton; Thirteen grandchildren, Ashley Brandner, Amber (Adrien) Signorello, Korey Lapp, Andee (fiance’ Jalanni), Abby, Regan and Riley Weisbeck, Stevie, Jesse (Allison) and Joshua Weisbeck, John (Nikiah), Mark and Kate Hamilton; Three great-grandchildren, Devan Weisbeck, Jade Weisbeck and Flora Signorello, just born on December 9, Mark’s birthday! Four siblings, Monica Stoltenberg, John (Nam) Weisbeck, Janet (John) Madden, and Rodney (Lena) Weisbeck; Six brothers-in-law and nine sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be planned this summer.
