Russell John Peacock was born on August 21, 1953, in Pickstown, SD, to John and Thelma (Landsverk) Peacock. His early years involved numerous moves, finally settling in Newell, SD, where he became active in Boy Scouts, forming his attitude early on for the love of the outdoors. In 1967 the family moved to Eagle Butte, SD.
Russell attended Springfield University, majoring in computer electronics. He married his high school sweetheart on February 16, 1974, and they returned to Springfield for Russell to finish his degree. They then moved to Eagle Butte and he began an electronics apprenticeship, earning his license, which offered him the credentials needed to be hired on by Grand Electric in Bison. He began working in 1978 as the appliance serviceman, a position he held until 1983, when an illness forced a leave of absence.
Upon his return he began his career with West River Telephone, as an apprentice combination tech. In 2002 he was promoted to Area Supervisor of telecommunications.
Russell was active in the Lions Club; he served on the Board of Dakota Plains Federal Credit Union, and as a member of the Presbyterian Church in Bison. He also taught hunter safety courses, served as an EMT and was a proud lifetime member of the NRA. His membership in the NRA led to a hobby and it quickly “ran amuck” and he soon became an FFL dealer, doing transfers for the NRA banquets and then beginning his own sports supply business.
He had hopes of regaining his health to spend time with family – doing all the things he loved – shooting, golf, fishing, camping and car shows. Russell enjoyed music, reading and many people have memories of his “softball” career. Those memories earned him the nickname “Homerun King”.
Most recently he revived an obsession with fast cars and was looking forward to trying his shooting skills in long range with a buffalo rifle.
Russell passed away on Sunday evening, January 17, 2021 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.
He is survived by his wife Becky, Bison, SD; sons, Jason (Wendy) Peacock, Bison, SD, and Michael (Bonnie) Peacock, Pringle, SD; 11 grandchildren, Branden, Ben, Brett, Alexis, Brooklyn, Trorin, Kyila, Ivy, M.J., Kalani, Ryker; three great-grandchildren, James, Traven and Taylie; brothers, Randy, Jerry (Eileen), Charles (Becky), Mark (Patty); sisters, Sandy Peacock and Nancy (Rick) Schrempp; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Tracy; brother, Mike; grandparents, Walter and Phylis Peacock and Arne and Tilda Landsverk.
