Her mother, along with the help of a pediatrician at the IHS Hospital in Fort Yates, ND, contacted a heart specialist, Dr. Thomas Jacobson from Hettinger, ND. His years of medical knowledge and experience, Janice’s illness was diagnosed as an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). This is a hole in the wall between the two upper chamber of her heart which required months of medication and appointments. As Janice got older, she became healthier and stronger, defeating the odds against her, dealing the need for open heart surgery which added comfort to her mother’s worry.

Later in life, Janice was diagnosed with diabetes. She was insulin dependent along with other medications. That didn’t slow her down much as she continued to play volleyball, basketball, co-ed softball, sno-ball tournaments with family and friends, attending church and revivals, she remained active until she got sick with complications due to diabetes. Jan started kidney dialysis, going three times a week. She had much support from her husband, Floyd, children, grandchildren, sister, Barb (Little Bird) St. John and Tiffany Good Iron.
