Gladys Fjeldheim, 83 of Herreid, SD died Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at the Herreid Good Samaritan Center. Private family services will be held. A celebration of life service will be at a later date. There will be a public visitation on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge from 4-8 PM. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.
Gladys Lucille Rossow was born to Earl and Christine (Deibert) Rossow on Sept 25, 1937 at their farm home in Campbell County, SD. She attended McKinley Country Grade School for 8 years; graduated from Herreid High School in 1955 and from Aberdeen School of Commerce in 1956.
On May 20, 1956, Gladys married Larry Fjeldheim in the Pollock, SD Old Town Lutheran Church. They lived on area farms until 1962 and moved to a farm east of Herreid in 1963. This was her home until she entered the Herreid Good Samaritan Center in January of 2020.
Gladys worked at the Renz grocery store during her high school years. In addition to helping with the farm and dairy operation she worked at the ASCS Office, Herreid Hospital, Bleau Law Office, and owned Kountry Klassic store from 1982 to 2017. She baked numerous cakes and made silk flower arrangements for weddings and special occasions for over 20 years. History and genealogy were a great interest of hers and many people called on her when looking for information of years gone by. She was instrumental in the production of the Herreid Centennial HIstory Book. She also recorded tapes for the blind through the Assembly of God library in Springfield, MO.
Gladys gave her heart to the Lord in 1946 in the Herreid Evangelical Church. It was a real joy in her life to serve Him. Gladys was a member of the Assembly of God Church where she taught Sunday School, Children’s Church, was church organist and pianist, and treasurer of the Women’s Ministries for many years. She was a long time volunteer at the Herreid Good Samaritan Center. She also held offices in the Country Cousins Extension Club and the County Extension Homemakers Board.
Gladys is survived by her son, Keith (Connie) Fjeldheim of Herreid, SD; grandchildren, Amber (Chris) Breuer of Sioux Falls, SD, Bethany (Jonathan Brady) Fjeldheim of Rochester, NY, Seth Fjeldheim of Herreid, SD; and great grandchild, Sullivan Breuer; sister, Ruth Mittleider of Herreid, SD; two brothers, James (Lavonne) Rossow, Buffalo, WY and Kenneth (Donna) Rossow, Mobridge, SD; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Quenzer of Central City, SD; Rita Fjeldheim of Herreid, SD, Phyllis Fjeldheim of Pollock, SD, and Holly Fjeldheim of Herreid, SD; brothers-in-law, Andrew (Cindy) Fjeldheim, Jr. and Alvin (Bernadette) Fjeldheim of Pollock, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Fjeldheim (February 25, 2014); her parents, father and mother-in-law Andrew and Arlouine Fjeldheim; brother-in-law, Mervin Mittleider; sisters-in-law, Deloris Fjeldheim and Judy Fjeldheim; brothers-in-law, Orland, Kenneth, Earl, Ernest, Shervin, and James Fjeldheim, and Henry Quenzer.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Herreid Good Samaritan Center.
