Graham “Buster” E. McQuown, 97, of Seneca, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at Faulkton Area Medical Center surrounded by family.
A private funeral mass will be held Thursday, May 6, 2021 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Faulkton, with Father Christopher Hughes presiding. Burial will follow at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Seneca.
Buster was born on April 25, 1924 to Graham and Fannie (Alexander) McQuown. He attended a rural country school which was about six miles from the McQuown home. He rode a horse on most days to and from school. Buster graduated from Seneca High School in 1943.
Following graduation from high school, Buster worked for various people in farming operations. Buster worked from sunup to sundown in an effort to save money for his own dream…his own farm. He still found time to drive the dirt roads to the local communities for dances and celebrations. At a skating outing, he met Joyce Spindler, his future bride. They were married on September 22, 1953 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Hoven, SD.
Buster and Joyce decided to buy the Fred Kittleman place in 1955. Buster remained on that very farm for the rest of his life.
Buster will be remembered for his love of his land and the livestock he so carefully raised. Buster was always looking to the future. There were cows to feed, hay to be made, and fences to be fixed. He loved the life he carved out so much that he could not see anything or anywhere else he would want to be. Buster was always looking to improve his operations whether it was for farming or cattle.
As with many of Buster’s generation, he was interested in the people of his community. He could always start a conversation with an old friend, or a brand new one. Buster’s children can attest to the fact that he knew people far and wide. Somehow it would become known that you were Buster’s kid and reminiscing would commence.
Buster’s memory will be cherished by his wife of 67+ years, Joyce McQuown of Seneca; children: Patty (Mike) Turnwall, Dale McQuown, Donald (Linda) McQuown, and Peggy (Todd) Mann; seven grandchildren, Sara (Elijah), Mike (Emily), Brendan (Shelby), Noel, Kayla (Eric), Nicole (Blake), and Jessie (Landon); fourteen great grandchildren, Layla, Roman, Maxwell, Callahan, Caleb, Haley, Hannah, Harper, Connor, Faith, Crew, Thad, Theo and Beckett.
Buster was preceded in death by his parents and all four of his sisters, Gladys (Harold Duncan), Maxine (Art King), Dorothea (Elmer Denvers), and Roberta (Don Baloun) and one brother Robert (Rose).
Rest In Peace dear husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Your work here is done.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are being directed to St. Thomas Church, c/o St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, PO Box 394, Faulkton, SD 57438.
