Funeral services for Joan Goetsch, 92, of Chamberlain, SD will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain, SD with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Hickey Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain.
Joan passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 9, 2021 at the Aurora Brule Nursing Home in White Lake, SD.
After spending most of her life on the farm south of Chamberlain, she moved into the Regency Retirement in 2018.
Laura Joan Dobberstein was born September 19, 1928 in Brule County to Albert and Bessie (Dobbin) Dobberstein.
She was baptized, confirmed in, and is a lifetime member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain, SD.
Joan attended rural schools and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1946. After high school she attended Black Hills Teacher’s College in Spearfish under the summer teacher certification program and then taught at a country school near Chamberlain for two years.
On May 24, 1948 she married (Melvin Richard) Dick Goetsch in Chamberlain, SD. They made their home on the farm near Chamberlain where Joan and Dick worked together in the business of farming. They celebrated 69 years of marriage before Dick’s passing in 2017.
Joan also held various jobs over the years at the Chamberlain Livestock Sale Barn, Wait’s Supermarket, Casey’s General Store and 20 years at Cozard Memorial Library. She liked flower and vegetable gardening and always had the pantry full of canned goods for her family to enjoy. She loved golfing especially with her grandchildren when the opportunity arose. She served as the Chamberlain Township Treasurer for many years. She discovered her talent for painting and much of her artwork was displayed in her home and gifted to friends and family.
She was a charter and lifelong member of the “Hi Neighbors” extension club, a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and an active member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.
Joan loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her three children, Terry (Sandy) Goetsch of Sioux Falls, SD, Myra (Jerry) Duba of Rapid City, SD, and Marty Goetsch of Chamberlain, SD; seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, her brother and sister-in-law Milo and Mary Ann Dobberstein, and her sister and brother-in-law Donna and Maynard Quakenbush.
