Aurelia Lucille Swan was born October 5, 1950, in Pierre South Dakota. She was the second to the oldest of seven children: the late Delilah (Madonna) Demery (Swan), the late Valerie Swan, the late James Swan, the late Irene Lara (Swan), Pamela Castro (Swan), and the late Nola Swan. She grew up in Cherry Creek, South Dakota with her parents and siblings in a home built by her father, Manuel James Swan.
Aurelia had seven children, three sons: the late Alwin Earl Swan, Gillis James Bear Stops Jr., Lumanuel Joseph Two Two and four daughters: the late Aleta Estelle Bear Stops, Angeli Evon Chavez (Bear Stops), the late Madonna Mae Morrison (Bear Stops), and Lucy Josephine Two Two.
She attended school in Cherry Creek and Idaho and graduated high school at C.E.B. (Cheyenne Eagle Butte). She would often speak proudly of her senior pictures being in a brochure. At one point she wanted to be a nurse and attended school in Pierre, South Dakota and then decided it wasn’t for her. Later on, she would earn her accounting degree at Steven Henagar’s College in Provo, Utah.
Aurelia was very active in the LDS church at a very young age. From being baptized to attending the Indian Placement Program and serving on a youth mission. She continued serving in the relief society and was involved in various activities from potlucks to teaching Sunday School. She loved to attend church weekly. Aurelia did have a temple recommendation and traveled to various Temples throughout her life. Salt Lake City Temple was her favorite.
Throughout Aurelia’s life she loved to travel and work in numerous cities. One of her favorite places that she lived, and work was Chicago, Illinois. She would often speak of her job at ITW Chronomatics. Aurelia was very family oriented and truly cared about her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. This led to her quitting her job in Chicago moving to Utah to take care of some of her grandchildren. While living in Utah she worked at Nestle until her retirement.
After retirement she moved back to Cheyenne River Reservation living in Isabel, then Cherry Creek, and finally Eagle Butte. While living in Eagle Butte she volunteered with the Foster Grandparent Program for a period of roughly ten years, which placed her at the daycare in Eagle Butte.
Her hobbies were going to pow wows, beading, sewing, playing bingo, and going to casinos with her siblings. One memory that stood out was of her late brother James Swan and brother in-law Enrique Castro. Her brother starting dancing next to the slot machine which drew a crowd. She would lovingly laugh when she recalled that memory.
Aurelia was true to her native name “Cante Waste Winyan” (Good Hearted Woman). Aurelia will be dearly missed. Thank you for being in our lives.
