Darlene Carter, 89, of Onida, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2021, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 23, 2021, at the United Methodist Church, Onida, with Pastor Jeff Adel presiding. Burial will follow in the Onida Cemetery. Visitation will be one-hour prior to the service.
Darlene Pearl Tennant was born in Gettysburg, SD, January 9, 1932, to Donald and Mildred (Kuhns) Tennant. She attended country school through the 8th grade at Vetter School, later graduating from Onida High School in 1949.
On March 10, 1950, Darlene was united in marriage to Clifford Carter. They made their home in Onida, raising their six children: Jim, Carol, Linda, Wanda, Mary, and Kim.
Darlene worked as a clerk for Jack and Jill’s Grocery Store and Lamb’s Store. Later, she provided an in-home daycare, having the privilege of caring for several of her grandchildren.
When she had free time and, in her retirement, Darlene enjoyed camping trips, the game show channel, casino nights, play cards especially pinochle, collecting bells, listening to country music, traveling, and putting together puzzles. She was an active member of the Onida Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Those left to cherish her life include her son: Jim (Jo) Carter, Onida; daughters: Wanda (Ed) Hauser, Onida, Mary (Hime) Hauser, Nashville, KS, and Kim (Steve) Christ, Waumandee, WI; son-in-law, Errol Peterson, Pierre; her grandchildren: Angie (Terry) Nelson, Eric (Tarrah) Peterson, Shonda (Chad) Schilling, Jennifer (Eric) Lease, Rose Hauser, Teri Carter, Cole (Rachael) Hauser, Jesse Hauser, Brenda (Jon) Morris, Courtney Hauser, and Taylor Christ; 12 great grandchildren; one sister, Edna Brenmeier; and one brother, Leon (Beverly) Tennant.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; her parents; daughters: Linda Carter and Carol Peterson; and two sisters: Dorothy Thompson and Helen Paxton.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Darlene’s arrangements.
