Joanne Jean Shoup, 69 of Pierre, passed away September 27, 2021 after a battle with cancer. Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00pm, Monday, October 4, 2021 at Feigum Funeral Home with funeral services beginning at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Joanne was born on July 11, 1952 in the small town of Wheatland, Wyoming to Russell R. and Marcelene (Pipher) DuVall. She was raised in Wyoming and Montana. In 1971, Joanne graduated from Darby, Montana with a 4.0 GPA and a full scholarship to the University of Montana. Looking for a new adventure, she went to National College of Business in Rapid City, South Dakota with only a suitcase in hand.
On August 31, 1971, Joanne married Larry Joe Shoup in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The couple spent their life together and raised their family of two daughters in Pierre, SD. Joanne worked her entire career for the State of South Dakota, alongside her husband who farmed west of Onida. They struggled through hard years, but through it all their love was strong and were immensely committed to one another.
She enjoyed trout fishing, the mountains, wildlife, being among her family, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was an avid reader of mystery and western pocket books, often staying up late into the night. Joanne was a very devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her family. Till the end of her life, she always put the welfare and pleasure of others above her own needs and desires.
She is survived by her husband; Larry Joe Shoup of Pierre, South Dakota, two daughters; Heather Shoup of Tremont, Illinois, Tara Shoup-Paulsson, of Uppsala, Sweden; two grandchildren, Lillie and Erik Shoup-Paulsson of Uppsala Sweden; and siblings Dora Stone, Sandra DuVall, William DuVall of Pierre, South Dakota, and Lora Grant of Santa Fe, Texas. Joanne was preceded in death by her sisters Rosella M. Irwin and Shirley Daw, a brother who survived only three hours after birth, and her parents.
