Anyone who knew Steve, knows what am impossible obituary this is to write. He would not want a big, long, drawn out sad memorial pamphlet so we are going to do our best to sum up this legendary man in as few words as possible….
Steven Scott Robinson was born to Cyrus “Scott” and Charlene Robinson, February 6, 1960. He was raised up on Pleasant Drive surrounded by his two brothers, Billy and Robert Robinson, and a mountain of cousins…all with a story to tell.
He would say that he didn’t find welding but that the welding found him, and it was not his first love but his way to support those he did love. He went to Job Corp to begin to learn his craft, but he would tell you that it was the welders he worked alongside that he learned the most from. Steve was not just a welder; he was a true artist. His talent was known across this country from California, to Tennessee, to Philadelphia where he was inspired by being in the “heart of the industry”. Beyond his legendary skills and talents was his humble approach to that work and his generosity to spread joy around through the names, railroad ties, birds, firepits and more. But what he loved most about the shop he named “Okee Dokee Welding” was the freedom to enjoy the company of those that brought him work. The ability to connect with the community with hard work and his hands was one of the things that brought him true happiness.
However, he might have just been a “dumb ol’ welder” but he was the whole world to his family and they to him. He loved being a dada to his 3 daughters Misty, Tabitha and Shelby but what he loved even more, if it was possible, was being Papa Steve. He wore that brand like a badge of honor. He taught them grit, grime, dirt bikes, peeing on trees, rat rods and so much more. Every one of us moms knows that mischievous grin he would get when getting himself and the kids in to trouble followed by the attempt at an innocent “WHAAAT?!”
In an attempt to keep this as short as possible, we will end with this. Steve’s true best friend was Jesus. He didn’t pray, he conversated. He did preach, he spoke with God’s empowering passion. And under no uncertain terms did he ever not give praise to The One who gave him this extraordinary life.
A family led memorial service will be held at 4:30pm on Saturday, October 2nd at his Okee Dokee Welding on 1905 Table Street in Pierre, followed by a dam run and then a remembrance supper and mingle at 2440 Kingsway Rd in Pierre.
