Ruth Starks, 92, of Gettysburg, passed away Thursday, October 21, 2021, at Avera Oahe Manor, Gettysburg.
Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 29, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg, with Fr. Brian Simon presiding. Burial of her cremains will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ruth was born March 16, 1929, to Robert “Bob” and Susan (Mouchet) Holmes in Gettysburg. She grew up in Gettysburg and received her education from Gettysburg High School.
On September 24, 1947, Ruth was united in marriage to Clyde A. Starks at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg. They made their home on a ranch northwest of Gettysburg until 1948 when they moved into town. They, along with the help of others, built the Starks apartments. They ran these for many years, keeping Ruth busy with cleaning and maintaining them. She also owned and operated, with her mother, the restaurant at the 5-mile corner west of Gettysburg for many years. She later ran the Eastside Drive Inn and worked at the Avera Oahe Manor.
Ruth enjoyed spending time working in her gardens. Many would tell her she had some of the nicest flowers in town.
Ruth is survived by her son, Bob Starks of Gettysburg; brothers: Loren (Nancy) Holmes of Mt. Pulaski, IL and Jim (Susan) Holmes of Boynton Beach, FL; brother-in-law, Bevin Roseland of Seneca; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clyde, in 1988; and one sister, Lucille Leckey.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Ruth’s arrangements.
