PIERRE – Pierre Governor Football will begin the 11AA playoffs Thursday with a quarterfinal game against Watertown at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium. Pierre is 7-2 after dropping their final regular season game last Thursday to Brookings. Watertown lost their last three regular season games and is 3-6. The Arrows lost at home last Thursday to Yankton, 20-13.
In the regular season, Pierre topped Watertown 52-42 in the Capital City on October 8, the first meeting between the schools in five years.
This will be the first playoff meeting between the Governors and Arrows since Pierre’s 34-7 win for the 2013 11AA championship at the DakotaDome.
Governor Head Coach Steve Steele said that the loss to Brookings wasn’t good, but also that it’s now in the past.
Steele felt that something positive came from the loss to the Bobcats.
As for Thursday’s game with Watertown, Steele thinks that which team learned the most and adjusted the most from the regular season game will be in good shape.
Steele was asked how Pierre must be better defensively than in the regular season game with the Arrows.
According to Steele, the Pierre defense must always be ready for Watertown quarterback Drew Norberg to attempt to connect on a big play with wide receiver Cole Holden.
Could the Governors be trying anything new in their offense?
Steele expressed the main keys for Pierre.
