Starting January 2, the cost to use River Cities Public Transit will go up.
Transit executive director Ron Baumgart says only about 15 percent of their operating budget comes from rider fees.
Baumgart says most fees are increasing between 50 cents and $1.
He says with the new fees also comes new technology.
Riders are able to use River Cities Public Transit gift cards, but drivers aren’t able to take credit or debit cards yet. Baumgart says they’re working toward that capability in the near future.
You can use a debit or credit card if you call ahead for a ride.

New River Cities Public Transit Fare Structure For The Pierre/Ft. Pierre Area
General Public Prescheduled Rides:
Flat Pickup Rate: $1.55 increase to $2.00
Up to 10 miles + $.25 per mile * Over 10 miles + $.75 per mile *
+ $2.00 per additional passenger going to the same location
Rides Scheduled the Same Day:
Flat Pickup Rate: $5.00 increase to $6.00
Up to 10 miles + $.50 per mile * Over 10 miles + $1.50 per mile *
+ $2.00 per child passenger(18 and under) going to the same location
+ $6.00 per additional adult passenger going to the same location
11:00 pm to 5:00 am Same Day rides under 10 miles – $6.00 per person
Youth & Senior Transportation Prescheduled Rides:
Flat Pickup Rate: $1.00 increase to $2.00
Over 10 miles + $.25 per mile *
+ $2.00 per additional passenger going to the same location
Boys & Girls Club and YMCA after school rides
15.00 to $25.00 per month per family
Children 3 and under ride free with an adult
A “No Show” fee at the cost of the ride missed will be paid before passenger rides again
Out of Town Non-Emergency Medical Transportation:
Trips are based on driver availability and at least 48 hour notice
Chamberlain/Mitchell/Sioux Falls
Tuesday and Thursday $25.00 increases to $40.00
Monday, Wednesday and Friday $75.00 increases to $100.00
All appointments made between 10:00am-2:00pm changing to 10:00am-1:00pm
Rapid City/Ft. Meade
Monday and Wednesday $25.00 increases to $40.00
Tuesday and Thursday $75.00 increases to $100.00
Friday $25.00 increases to $100.00
All appointments made between 9:00am-1:00pm changing to 9:00am-12:00pm
All other destinations will be at the rate of $.50 per mile
Additional stops $5.00 increases to $6.00
We will now require prepayment for all out of town trips
