Lowell L. Carlson, eldest son of Lloyd Sr. and Emma (Welfl) Carlson, was born January 8, 1930 on the farm in Gregory County. He attended country school in Gregory County. After the eighth grade, he worked on various farms and ranches around the area. He became reacquainted with Alice Frank whom he met when country schools would get together to do standardized testing.
In 1951, Lowell was drafted during the Korean War. He came home on furlough and on July 22, 1953, Lowell was united in marriage to Alice Frank in Burke, SD. They spent a few months in Colorado before he was Honorably Discharged in 1953.
After his return from military duty, he was employed at various jobs around the area. In 1954, Lowell began working for the South Dakota Department of Transportation in the highway department and he was promoted to foreman in 1958. They relocated to Chamberlain where they made their forever home. He retired in 1989 from the DOT. Retirement did not mean slowing down. Lowell kept busy doing various jobs for Eldon Willuweit, Bob Burke, along with other people who needed some “tinkering” on items. He was a general handyman to many. Lowell and Alice loved to go fishing.
Lowell and his good friend Don Schaub were the “local inspectors” checking the progress of different projects around town.
Lowell was a lifelong member of the VFW and a member of the United Church of Christ.
