Wayne passed away, Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.
Arend Wayne Vander Laan was the first child born to Gertrude (Vander Wal) and John A Vander Laan on May 22, 1935.
Wayne married Shirley Anna Aberle on April 30 1965 on the family farm with an intimate ceremony consisting of a few family and friends. Shortly after they were married Wayne and Shirley moved to a farm just northwest of the Vander Laan farm. At their new farm they welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Carla Kay (Oct. 25 1965). Although they had no running water, they had a home filled with love.
In the spring of 1966 they purchased a farm west of Mound City where he resided the remainder of his life. While starting his agricultural endeavor they welcomed their second and third children, Trenton Wayne (Sept. 11 1966) and Tobey John (November 1, 1967). During his many years of hard work and exploration of farming, Wayne found his love for the land. His sentiment for farm animals ranged from pigs, horses, chickens, and of course milk cows. On March 2, 1974 the arrival of their last born Amber Lee completed the Vander Laan family.
Wayne spent the majority of his life working hard on the farm but on occasion he would pull out his electric guitar and serenade his family with some old country twang. He loved to play dominoes and card games with the family and always gave his opinion on the latest crop reports.
When Wayne decided to “slow down” at the age of 65 he started the Renegade auto business which kept him busy for about 15 years. He decided he was not busy enough, and wanted a good quality snack, so Wild Dutchman Seeds was born in Shirley’s kitchen in 2002. When Shirley demanded her kitchen back Wayne moved into the retired milk barn with homemade equipment. The business grew with his persistence and became a family corporation with a new seed factory in 2006.
Wayne is survived by his wife Shirley of 56 years. His children Carla K Becker (Lonnie) of Laramie, WY, Trenton (Roxanne) of Omaha, NE, Tobey (Sandra) of Mound City, SD, Amber Brandner (Chris) of Piedmont, SD. His sister Maebel Nieuwsma of Herreid SD, his sister in law Peggy Vander Laan, his sister in law Lucille Aberle of California, 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Virgil Vander Laan, his brothers in law Jim Nieuwsma, Roger Aberle, Alan Aberle his grandson Bain Weisbeck.
