PIERRE – A youthful but relatively experienced Pierre Governor girls basketball team will open its season at home this weekend at the Riggs High Gym, hosting Rapid City Stevens on Friday night and Rapid City Central on Saturday afternoon.
The Governors’ leading returning scorer is Remington Price, who averaged 13.7 points per game and made 54 three-pointers, second most in a single season in program history. Ayvrie Kaiser and Reese Terwilliger will be expected to take up the scoring and rebounding load.
Head coach Kirk Beebout wants the Governors’ offense to have a high pace.
Beebout says that having “flow” helps both sides of the ball.
Beebout, in his second season as the Pierre head coach, is optimistic.
Again, Pierre will have a young team, but Beebout thinks it has the potential to improve quickly.
Beebout admits that there could be some struggles, but also feels that this Governor team could be a good one.
Ayvrie Kaiser had a great volleyball season, making second-team All-State. Can that success carry over for her to basketball?
Remington Price has 102 career three-pointers in two seasons, but Beebout emphasizes that she can do more than that.
Beebout said that a good transition game will be important for the Governors.
Ryann Berry will start at point guard, where the graduated Caytee Williams had been. Beebout is sure that Berry will do well.
Beebout says that whatever happens this weekend won’t make or break the season.
Pierre will play fourth-ranked Rapid City Stevens at the Riggs High Gym Friday. Coverage will begin at 6:30 on 1060/103.1 KGFX, with live and archived video at the KGFX page at the DRG News app & drgnews.com. DRG Media Group Sports Director David Burrall will call the action.
