Cherish “Maggie” Bull Bear, 36, of West Bend, passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021 at the Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, Pierre, SD.
Funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 16, 2021, at the St. Catherine’s Hall, Big Bend, Father Christianus Hendrik, celebrant. Burial will follow at the Howe Family Cemetery, Big Bend. A wake will be 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at the hall.
Pallbearers are Londell Ashley, Carlos Chavez, Wakiya Jewett, Ken Jewett III, Unspesni Howe, and Gabriel Bull Bear. Honorary Pallbearers are all the nurses at the Avera Hospitals in Pierre and Sioux Falls, Cody Crane, Cynthia Bear Robe and Jodi Dunn.
Cherish “Maggie” Magedeline was born in Pierre, South Dakota on May 2, 1985, to Allen Bull Bear and Candace Howe. Cherish attended school in Bismarck, North Dakota; she then moved to South Dakota and graduated from high school at Crow Creek Tribal School in 2004.
Maggie enjoyed listening to music, baking, spending with family, trying new makeup, fixing her hair, and watching movies. As a young girl, Maggie enjoyed jingle dress dancing at powwows across North and South Dakota.
Maggie suffered a long-term illness and spent many months at Avera in Sioux Falls. She passed away in Pierre at Avera St. Mary’s surrounded by her family, including her children.
She will be missed by all her family in Big Bend, where she spent most of her time.
Maggie was survived by her children: Ansel Fish, Jr., Akiticiahoksila Bull Bear, Mapiya Fish, Precious Fish, Chante Bull Bear, and Cyril Fish; mother, Candace (Roger Colomke) Howe; father, Allen Bull Bear, Sr.; siblings: Allen (Tiffany) Bull Bear, Jr. and Millo Bull Bear; nephews: Gabriel and Zachary Bull Bear; maternal grandparents: John and Cynthia Howe; paternal grandparents: Stella and Leo Bull Bear; aunts: Janice (Louis) Adrian, Clarice Jewett, Marice Ashley; her uncles: Raynard (Loralee) Howe, Sr. and Charles Howe; and her adopted mother, Joanne Crow Dog.
She was preceded in death by her uncles, John Howe, Jr., Randolph His Law, and Ken Jewett; and her aunts: Ethel Left Hand Bull and Beatrice Seaboy.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Cherish’s arrangements.
