Edna May Adkins was born to Budd and Anna (Carl) Adkins on October 19, 1924. She graduated from Miller High School in 1944. After graduation, she began teaching rural grade school in northern Hand County.
She married Donald Ames on August 12, 1945. Shortly after marriage, she moved with him to Temple, Texas for a few months while he was in the military. While in Texas, she worked at the Soda Fountain at the local store. They returned to northern Hand County where they farmed, and she went back to teaching.
In 1953, they moved to Mankato, Minnesota and she worked at the Oleander Bar. They returned to the farm in 1956. In 1957, their son, Michael Ames, was born. In 1962, they purchased the Hi-Way Store south of Miller where she stayed until moving to Good Samaritan Society in 2017.
Edna’s favorite think to do was waiting on customers at the store. Many people had visits with her, and she also liked to “cut the cheese” and did not want anyone to help her. She was behind the counter almost all the time.
Surviving Edna is her son, Mike (Florentina) Ames of Miller; sister, Mildred (Adkins) Ortmeier of Sioux Falls; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents, Budd and Anna; siblings: Ralph, Donald, and Robert; and many in-laws.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Edna’s arrangements.
