Richard Martin Schulte was born April 21, 1928 to Stephen and Lena (Boeckman) in a granary on the homestead while the house was being built. He graduated with honors from Orient High School. Following graduation he worked for Boeing Airlines in California for a short time, then returned to the farm due to the age and health of his father.

He served on the Orient Cenex Board and the Orient Township Board for more than 20 years. He sang at weddings and funerals in his younger years.
