Donald John “Jack” Campbell was born July 8, 1939 in Onida to Donald R. and Bernice (Fuller) Campbell. He grew up in Fairview township and attended rural schools there. He then attended Onida High School graduating with the class of 1957. After high school he attended Huron College for a short time before returning home to farm and ranch with his father.
He was united in marriage to Lillian Mikkelsen on May 30, 1961. To this union three children were born Jacqueline Marie, Scott Donald and Gregg Allen.
Jack continued to farm and ranch. He loved the farm and planted several groves of trees as an improvement every year. Many of these were handplants. They built a new home in 1971 as wells as corrals.
He was a beekeeper for several years, tending the hives and processing the honey. It was hard work but enjoyable and met several fellow beekeepers throughout the state. After a few years he had to give it up because the boxes got too heavy for two worn out knees!
He was a charter member of the Agar Gun Club. He enjoyed helping to get it set up and the trapshooting. Jack did a lot of trapshooting throughout the state and was joined by his son Scott at several meets.
Jack loved hunting and fishing whether it was goose hunting with friends or fishing with family. He was a fishing guide for a time before beginning hunting services. “Dakota Wild Bird Hunts” was his pride and joy. He and his wife Lillian hosted hunters from most every state for 30 years. Many great friendships were made and he kept in contact with many of them.
Once he began turkey hunting, that was his favorite bird to hunt. His greatest joy was taking his grandsons turkey hunting. There are many stories to tell and great memories!
Jack loved sports and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate whether it was basketball, football or hockey.
He is survived by his wife Lillian, daughter Jackie (Kirk) Yackley, son Scott (Liz) Campbell, son Greg (Shelly) Campbell, grandchildren Mark (Lori) Yackley, Tom (Ashley) Yackley, Andy Yackley, Aksel Campbell, Hunter Campbell, Cody (Nikki) Campbell, Kenna (Joel) Thomsen, Melissa Berg, great grandchildren Brayden Yackley, Conner Yackley, Carson Yackley, Kendyl Yackley, Jane Yackley, Emily Yackley, Owen Yackley, and Maxx Yackley, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joan Harter, brothers-in-law Bob Harter, Bob Mikkelsen, Darrell Mikkelsen, sister-in-law Jeannine Johnson and his beloved hunting dog ‘Henry’.
We wish to thank Jack’s wonderful caregivers at Edgewood Care Center for great care given him over the past two years.
