Jack was born June 6, 1931, at home on the family farm. He was born to John “Jack” Richards and Maggie (Murer) Richards.
Jack worked on the farm with his father and his grandfather James. His father came ill and was thinking he was going to have to “sell the place” Jack said no you won’t! His parents had to move to town due to his father’s health issues. So, Jack quit high school and took over. He always found pleasure in taking his team of horses past the school yard full of kids and waving on his way by.
On April 10, 1959, Jack was married to Beverley Rada. To this union, 2 children were born Jacquie in 1960 and Gary in 1962.
Jack remained living on the family farm with his family until 1976 when he moved to Murdo. Jack went to work for the Jones County Highway Department and continued to operate the farm & ranch. Jack retired from the county in 1996. He sold his last cows around 2004 and began to rent it out for many years. This 100 year farm has made its way back into family operation with his grandson Paul and his family. Jack retired from the County in 1996.
Jack loved the farm and the animals. He especially took pride in the fact that he had helped take care of many nieces, nephews, and children of family friends. Jack always had a special place in his heart for kids. Jack said there was always room for one more child!
Jack had one of the biggest hearts and one of the most giving men there were. He was always the first to jump at helping ANYONE with ANYTHING. The last few months had been very trying. He appreciated every little bit of help from all the wonderful family and friends he had. He always said he was so lucky to have a such a wonderful family. He was so blessed to be able to make a final trip to farm few days prior to passing. He said that was the “Best Day Ever.”
