Maurice Emmett Hollow Horn was born December 19, 1951, along with his chekpa Mary at the Old Cheyenne Agency in South Dakota to Emmett and Pearl (Condon) Hollow Horn. Siblings included Mary, Terry, John, Candace, Veldon, Janelle and Zigmund. Maurice grew up on the Hollow Horn ranch located on the Rattlesnake Creek near Red Scaffold, SD. He spent a lot of his childhood in the country enjoying time with his siblings, cousins, and neighbors. Maurice rode horseback everywhere he needed to go. He loved being around the horses and would spend hours riding them, breaking them, taking care of them, and teaching his siblings to be safe around them. He especially loved the rodeos they had out in the country. He enjoyed all rodeos throughout his life and attended as many as he could, dressing up in his Sunday best outfit and having a nice cold drink.
Maurice attended grade school at the St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, SD and graduated from Stephan High School on the Crow Creek reservation in 1970. He then went on to receive his certification in cattle operations from the Kansas Technical Institute. Maurice enjoyed bareback riding, steer wrestling and bull riding. When he was not riding horses or attending rodeos, Maurice could be found on the basketball court. He enjoyed playing and later in life, he enjoyed watching his sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters and nieces and nephews’ play. Maurice spent his time fencing, building corrals, fixing tack and other duties to keep the ranch going. He spends his life surrounded by horses and cattle. He looked forward to branding each spring, Maurice was a simple man who loved everything about his country life. Often, he could be found at a horse race, whether it was Indian relay racing, suicide racing, or good old match racing, he always brought some fast horses. Some were even fast enough to outrun a Harley Davidson.
He was always willing to lend a hand when asked. Maurice loved his family, even though he did not say it, he would show them ways he loved them. Maurice will always be remembered for telling his stories, giving advice, or teaching lessons. Maurice loved life. He approached everyone in a humble way. He spent his last days on the Double H Ranch. He would walk over to his sisters’ houses around lunch and suppertime then go spend his evenings staring at the stars and telling stories to anyone who was around. Maurice would often disappear for days and later tell his sisters he went out for a T-bone steak and cold drink.
Maurice married Renee West, during this union Marcus and Maura were born. Maurice and his chekpa married their spouses on the same day during a double wedding. Mary was born first, and Maurice would spend his life trying to “up her” and do something before she could do it, but Mary always won this game. They even raced to have a child before each other. This is where Maurice got his drive to win. He even challenged a motorcycle in a race and won with his horse. Maurice later married June Runs After and to this union Jacob, Maureen, Kaleb, and Maurissa were born. Maurice mourned the loss of his son Jacob and daughters Maureen and Maura.
Maurice spent several years with his special friend Paulette High Elk. They enjoyed road trips, attending rodeo’s, and, spending time together.
