The remodeling and renovation of the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area is still in the early stages, but the facility has a new, 45-year lease agreement with the City of Pierre.
Pierre city project manager Gidget Palmer says under the new agreement, Capital Area Counseling– the entity that oversees the club’s operations– pays $1 for the use of the building.
Club executive director Becky Spoehr thanked the city commission and staff for their help keeping the remodel and renovation process moving forward smoothly.
While the construction is being done, Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area activities will be held at the South Dakota Discovery Center on Wednesdays and First United Methodist Church on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Spoehr says they’ve set up information on the “Remind App” for fast, easy communication between the club and parents during the building renovation.
The project is expected to start this summer and be completed by June 30, 2020.
On a related note, the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area’s “Great Futures” fundraising campaign is underway. This year’s goal is $150,000.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area project includes the demolition of the south addition of the Club. The area that is demolished will be rebuilt to include a second story. This space will include a new kitchen, programming space and offices.
Palmer says Journey Group will serve as the Construction Manager at Risk, managing the project on behalf of the City of Pierre and the Boys and Girls Club. She says their job is to guarantee the construction cost and ensure all contractors meet construction expectations and deadlines.
The Pierre City Commission also approved an agreement for Capital Area Counseling Services to pay the city $180,000 per year for ten years. The Club raised $1.8 million, which the city is matching to pay for the renovations. A Community Development Block Grant provided by the State will cover the remaining $770-thousand for the project.
