Funeral Services for Gary Richard Dupris Sr., 64, of On The Tree will be at 10 AM, Saturday, February 12, 2022, at the Dupris Family Residence. Burial will be at the Dupris Family Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Wake services will be at 7 PM at the residence. Gary passed away Saturday, February 5, 2022, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.
Gary Richard Dupris, Sr. was born November 2, 1957 at the old Cheyenne Agency to Edward and Evelyn (Good Bear) Dupris. He grew up on the family ranch at On The Tree, South Dakota. He attended grade school in Isabel, South Dakota, as well as grade school and high school at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, South Dakota. From his Junior year, until graduation in 1978, he attended Flandreau Indian School.
While at Flandreau, he met Cheryl Shooter and the two were married in 1978. To this union, came their two eldest children, Jesse and Jamie Dupris. In 1999, Gary met Catherine Lone Fight and the two were married. To this union came Gary Jr., Layne and Hayley Dupris.
From 1978 to 1980, he worked with Harlan & Georgie Gunville Rodeo Company. In 1989, Gary & Cheryl, along with Jesse and Jamie, moved to Bremerton, Washington. During his time in Bremerton, he worked for various construction companies. In 1992, Gary moved his family home to help his father, Edward, run the family ranch.
Some of his hobbies included playing darts, shooting pool and Indian Relay. From 1970, at the age of 13, Gary began Indian Relaying for his father Ed. Gary always reminisced about it being one of the best times of his life as a young teen Indian Relaying for any of his dad’s races. From 1970 until 1975 (Age 18), Gary was literally unbeaten in Indian Relay. Some of Gary’s most cherished crowbaits (horses) to race were Red, Missy, Sir John, Kelly and Cactus.
Gary, Sr. is survived by his children: Jesse (Jennifer) Dupris of Oglala, SD; Jamie (Fred Crowe) Dupris of On The Tree, SD; Gary Dupris, Jr. of On The Tree, SD; Layne Dupris of On The Tree, SD; and Hayley (Ka’bryni Hall) Dupris of On The Tree, SD; Grandchildren: Corleone Dupris (U.S. Army), Amora and Eduardo Bernabe, Frances Dupris, Damian, Alexis, Peyton Salciedo and Hannah Crowe; Siblings: Roger (Betty) Dupris of Timber Lake, SD; Jolee Pfeifle of Pierre, SD; Andy (Elma) Dupris of White Horse, SD; Marsha LeBeau (Ron Eagle Chasing) of Eagle Butte, SD; and Ginger Bowman of Eagle Butte.
He is proceeded in death by his parents Edward Dupris and Evelyn (Good Bear) Dupris; sisters Jo Esther Red Willow and Edna Dupris and grandson Emerson Dupris.
