Pierre T.F. Riggs High School Junior, Kate Mullett, will be participating and performing with the ACDA Midwestern Regional High School Honor Choir in Chicago, IL, this weekend (Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022).
Kate auditioned for the ensemble back in September where she had to sing a scale showing her range, and she had to sing excerpts from two pieces chosen for the honor choir. All scales and excerpts had to be sung a cappella, showing her control of pitch, rhythm, dynamics, phrasing, and breath control.
The American Choral Directors Association is a national organization that hold honor choirs at the state, regional, and national level. Students audition through a member of the organization (usually a teacher). State honor choir for South Dakota takes place each summer at the end of July. Regional and National Honor Choirs take place on an every-other-year basis. This year is a Regional year and next year will be a national year. The midwestern region for ACDA includes South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, and Ohio.
The Regional ACDA conference takes place in Chicago beginning Wednesday evening February 16 and culminating with the final concert on Saturday February 19th.
Kate will rehearse with 200-250 other students February 17-19 to prepare for their concert with their guest conductor.
While there are other students from South Dakota who were also chosen for the honor choir, there is no set number of participants that represent each state.
There are honor choirs at the elementary and middle school levels that will be performing as well. Kate received her music in December and has been prepping for the choir with her teacher, Mr. Rodd Bauck.
