Alys Ann Brakke, 86, of Harrisburg, South Dakota, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2022, at Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls. A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 26, at 1:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Presho with Pastor Ray Greenseth officiating.
For those unable to attend the services they can be viewed in the window below.
Alys Ann was born on September 23, 1935, in Presho, South Dakota, to Lorraine (Lamb) and Lloyd Cross. She was the youngest of 12 children. She graduated from Presho High School and in 1956 graduated from St. John’s School of Nursing. On January 27, 1957, she married Noble Thomas Brakke in Presho, and they dedicated many years to raising their family of six children. She was happiest when all the family was gathered together.
Alys Ann especially enjoyed the scenery, sights, and sounds of country living. She was active for many years in the Jayceettes, Extension Club, church circle groups, bowling league, Lyman Squares square dancing club, and many Bible study groups. As her children grew and left the nest, Alys Ann returned to her nursing career, working as a long-term care RN for many years in Winner and Pierre.
Alys Ann was exceptionally resourceful and enjoyed many pursuits over the years: tending bountiful gardens, baking bread with wheat gathered straight from the field – and sewing — so much sewing. She was a founding member of the Sew What Quilters Guild in 2002. Quilts were her love language and will wrap her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with love for many years to come. She was a piece-maker and peacemaker. Alys Ann’s quick wit, wry humor, and willingness to try about anything made for much fun, forged lasting friendships, instilled goodness, and built community.
In June 2015, Alys Ann and Noble moved to Harrisburg to be closer to family and healthcare. At The Meadows Apartments she spent many happy hours with the new neighbors. The community room provided a place for games, potlucks, quilting, puzzles, parties, and visiting.
Alys Ann loved her Savior, Jesus Christ. Reading Psalms and listening to gospel music soothed her soul and comforted her through trying times.
Grateful for having shared in her life and love include: sisters Ardis Williams and Doris Venekamp; husband of 65 years, Noble; children, Lauren, Neal (Carmen), Sid (Cindy), Jann, Joy (Dan), and Jordon (Terri); grandchildren, Amanda Comp, Tyler, Tanner, and Tell Langdeau; Nick, Seth, Colby, and Alicia Brakke; Traci Collison; Angie Thomas; Alia Kraft; and Carson Brakke; and great-grandchildren, Brady, Wes, Jack, Emery, Bronwyn, Logan, Alyssa, Devon, Lilly, Grace, Madelyn, Chevelle, Jett, Chisum, Soren, Noble Lee, Jayden, Hadleigh, Burkley, Rhaelee, Oakley, and Mesa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Elis, Lyle, Leslie, Junior, and Earl Cross, infant brother, Thelma Johnson, Carol Hofer, and Margaret Esmay.
