Jonni Lynn Meyer “Scootz” was born September 2, 1990 to Velda Howe Phillips and John Ray Meyer in Chamberlain, SD. She attended Chamberlain Headstart, Elementary, Middle School, and High School later transferring to Better Alternative School, and graduating in 2011 from Crow Creek High School in Stephan. Her favorite teacher was Pat Kenyon Wolf.
She worked at Al’s Oasis and Lynn’s Dakota Mart, worked with her dad at M&M Construction and as a custodian for Crow Creek Tribe School. Her favorite boss was “Grandpa” Leroy Chavez. In high school, she was in the Peers Helping Peers program and On Eagle’s Wings Program. She enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, writing, lyrics, poems, artwork, and baking. She enjoyed making music with her cousin Talon Bazille Ducheneaux. She was famous for her pineapple upside down cakes, creative ideas on roasting turkey, special mashed potatoes, and her spaghetti. She loved making pot roast and shrimp boils and her favorite “junk food” were Cool Ranch Doritos. Children all loved her, and she babysat for many family members. She doctored animals and helped at her family brandings and did the vaccinations. She was the coolest teacher to her son Lyric and Bryanna, her niece that she was raising. Lyric was four years old and could read, knew his colors, alphabet, numbers, count to 100, knows sign language and recently was learning to play piano. She taught him songs and prayers. She also helped raise Lancer Howe, her nephew. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Fort Thompson, SD. She was an enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe. Scootz was a member of a church singing group called JAM named for Jonni, Anna, and Misty. She loved going out cruising especially across the Dam and doing rodeos with her brother Dusty.
Jonni “Scootz” and Elliott “Smellz” met August 6, 2010 and on May 10, 2020 he proposed to Jonni. They welcomed their son Lyric Lee Legend Driving Hawk on November 9, 2017 and adopted Bryanna Joan St. Cloud in 2017.
Jonni had favorite “lucky” numbers of 51 and 33 and her favorite colors were green, black, and camo.
Jonni passed away at 12:51 pm on February 26, 2022 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 31 years. Gratefully sharing her life are her fiancé Elliott Driving Hawk; son Lyric; daughter Bryanna; mother Velda Howe-Phillips; father Johnny R. Meyer; sister Misty Meyer, brothers Dusty Meyer, Matthew Thompson, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives too numerous to mention.
Preceding her in death were her paternal grandparents Robert Meyer and Pearline Ashes, maternal grandparents Helena Harrison and Donald K. Howe; her brother Daniel Ray Howe; adopted sister Hilda Cheka Eagle Elk; aunts Darla K. Howe, Donna Marie Howe, Irene Moore, Roberta Fox; uncle Craig Meyer and Darrell McBride; special cousin Zane Azure, special brother-in-law Martin Grassrope and special friend Daniel Hollow-Horn.
