WATERTOWN – Poor shooting and foul trouble meant big trouble for White River, and the Tigers will not repeat their 2021 state championship.
Avery Broughton scored 21 points with 11 rebounds Thursday as Corsica-Stickney rallied to defeat White River 49-43 Thursday in the first round of the SDHSAA Girls Class B State Tournament at the Watertown Civic Arena.
Broughton was 11-of-14 at the free throw line, helping the Jaguars (21-3) shoot 19-of-28 overall.
Maleighya Estes led White River (18-4) with 22 points, but eventually fouled out. Tana Bear Heels scored eight.
White River held Corsica-Stickney to 26 percent shooting from the floor, but shot only 27 percent themselves. Corsica-Stickney, after trailing 41-37 about midway through the fourth quarter, used a 12-2 run to end the game.
On Friday, White River will meet Aberdeen Roncalli in the consolation round. Top seed Aberdeen Roncalli, the 2021 Class A champion, was surprised Thursday by Viborg-Hurley 69-58.
