Burtis White Wolf Jr., 42, of Dupree, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021, at his home in Dupree.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am MDT, Monday, August 2, 2021 at Pioneer Hall, Dupree. Burial will follow at St. Marks Cemetery, Red Scaffold. A wake will be 7:00 p.m., Sunday, August 1, 2021, at Pioneer Hall, with a procession from the 2-mile at 4:00 p.m.

Burtis Thomas White Wolf Jr. “BJ” was born September 20, 1978 to Burtis White Wolf Sr. and Lynda Oakie in Eagle Butte, SD.

BJ spent his childhood in Red Scaffold where many memories with his brother Dean and
sister “Skoob” Crissy were made. BJ attended Dupree school until his eighth-grade year and then he attended Takini High School, graduating as salutatorian in 1997. BJ had many highlights while attending Takini School, “Skyhawks for life,” he would say. Two of his biggest accomplishments were participating in the National Rodeo finals and State Basketball tournament. He was so very proud of these and would talk about them often. He always would tease Dean about all the flashy lights at Nationals. However, going to the state basketball tournament he held in high regards. There were many life lessons and techniques his coach Hank Taken Alive taught him. He would often speak highly of Hank’s techniques and would instill them in his children. Following high school, BJ worked various jobs: LTM, Cheyenne River Housing, and Maria’s Bar, where he picked up his love for darts. BJ loved to build things and could fix almost anything. If he couldn’t figure it out, he knew he could call his dad, and one could rest assured Burtis and BJ would get the job done. He loved his dad and big brother Jason so much and always sought guidance from them. Not long after high school on June 28, 1998 BJ met the love of his life, Holly Jo Reede. They married on November 15, 2008 and together were blessed with four beautiful children: Ashley, Adrianna, Tre’ Roper, and Aliaunna. He was so very proud of them and helped/guided them in everything they did from cooking, hunting, sports, and even the Lakota traditions.

BJ was also very proud of his nephew, “Lil Bubba” Jade White Wolf and niece “Laylay Girl” Lacey White Wolf. He was their “Bubba.” BJ was known for cooking his famous gaboo boo bread, mac-n-cheese, and deer meat. He started cooking at a very young age. A memory recalled was when Jess Knight had come to the house for breakfast and BJ had pulled up a chair and started to cook. Jess told him, “You better get down from there young man.” BJ said, “it’s ok, I’m just going ramble them.”

BJ loved the Lakota way and he taught his children all he knew. He took pride in singing and being a drum keeper. BJ sang at sundances and powwows. He loved the powwow trail so much it’s been told that he and “the boys” showed up a week early for a powwow!

BJ was a family man and loved his entire family.

BJ is survived by his wife, Holly White Wolf; children: Ashley (Kylee) White Wolf, Adrianna (Marveen) White Wolf, Tre’ Roper White Wolf, Aliaunna White Wolf, and Kaedynce Iron Wing; father, Burtis White Wolf Sr.; brother, Jason (Nicole) White Wolf; sisters: MaShawn White Wolf, Misty White Wolf and Laneta White Wolf; nephew, Jade White Wolf; niece, Lacey White Wolf; and many aunts, uncles, lala’s, unci’s, cousins, friends, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Lynda Oakie; sister, Michelle White Wolf Kills in Water; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
