Pierre’s Deer Management Task Force has determined there’s no need for a deer harvest within city limits this year.
Police chief Jason Jones says task force members met with staff from the South Dakota Department of Game Fish and Parks and reviewed local deer complaint and deer accident statistics.
According to police records so far in 2018, there have been eight crashes involving deer and five complaints of deer in Pierre. By comparison, in all of 2017 there were 16 crashes involving deer in town and five complaints of deer in town.
Jones says the task force and GFP have worked together on the urban deer management program since 2007.
The Task Force did recommend a deer count be done in 2019.
