The Pierre Fire Department held its annual awards banquet on Friday (Dec. 6, 2024), recognizing individuals who went above and beyond in their service this past year.
The highest honor, the Marso Award, was presented to Paul Kenefick-Aschoff for his exceptional performance and commitment to the department over the last 20 years.
The Firefighter of the Year Award, was awarded to Ron Bren for his exemplary service and leadership throughout the year.
Brandon VanZee was honored with the Rookie of the Year Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions as a new member of the department.
In addition, three individuals— Harold Blackbull, Andrik Blackhorse and Therryn Blackhorse— were honored for their heroic actions during a structure fire on September 1, 2024.
Fire Chief Ian Paul says the trio noticed smoke coming from a building and immediately pulled over to help. He says the group rescued an individual from the smoke-filled home and took quick action by applying water to the fire until firefighters arrived, preventing further harm and damage.
