In honor of National Law Enforcement Memorial week, the annual South Dakota Law Enforcement Memorial Service will be held in Pierre this morning (May 15).
A wreath laying ceremony will take place at 9:30 AM at the Law Enforcement Memorial located at Capitol Lake. At 10 AM a motorcade will travel from the George S. Mickelson Building to the Madison Avenue Church of Christ where the memorial Service will take place starting at 10:30 AM.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which the date falls as Police Week. In keeping with this tradition, the South Dakota Fraternal Order of Police in conjunction with state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies have held this annual memorial service to honor the 66 Law Enforcement Officers killed in the line of duty in South Dakota.
