South Dakota producers planted 4.80 million acres of corn for all purposes, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 9 percent from last year. Of the total acres, 94 percent were planted with biotechnology varieties, down 2 percentage point from 2018. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 4.32 million acres, down 11 percent from a year ago.
Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 4.40 million acres, down 22 percent from last year. Of these, 93 percent were planted with genetically modified, herbicide resistant seed, down 4 percentage point from 2018. Producers expect to harvest 4.36 million acres, down 22 percent from a year ago.
Winter wheat planted last fall is estimated at 850,000 acres, up 2 percent from a year ago. Harvested area is expected to total 730,000 acres, up 11 percent from last year.
Other spring wheat planted area is estimated record low at 800,000, down 24 percent from a year earlier. Harvested acreage is expected to total 770,000, down 20 percent from a year ago.
South Dakota durum wheat estimates have been discontinued from the NASS crop estimating program starting in 2019.
Oil sunflower planted area is estimated at 500,000 acres, down 4 percent from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 485,000 acres, unchanged from a year ago.
Non-oil sunflower planted area is estimated at 40,000 acres, down 22 percent from the previous year. Harvested
area is estimated at 37,000 acres, down 18 percent from the previous year.
Sorghum planted for all purposes is estimated at 215,000 acres, down 17 percent from the previous year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 160,000 acres, down 20 percent from last year.
Oats planted for all purposes is estimated at 210,000 acres, down 28 percent from last year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 85,000 acres, down 11 percent from last year.
Barley producers planted 48,000 acres, unchanged from last year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 11,000 acres, down 15 percent from last year.
Safflower planted, at 21,000 acres is up 14 percent from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 19,000 acres, up 9 percent from the previous year.
Proso millet planted estimated record low, at 33,000 acres, is down 31 percent from last year. Harvested acreage will be released in January 2020 in the Crop Production Summary.
Dry edible pea planted acreage is estimated record low at 15,000 acres, down 32 percent from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 14,000 acres, down 26 percent from the previous year.
South Dakota flaxseed estimates have been discontinued from the NASS crop estimating program starting in 2019.
Alfalfa acreage to be harvested for dry hay is estimated at 1.80 million acres, up 3 percent from last year. Other hay acreage to be cut for dry hay is estimated at 1.45 million acres, down 3 percent from a year ago.
The estimates of planted and harvested acreages in this news release are based primarily on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of June.
