The local American Red Cross is helping several families after the Friday night fire at an apartment complex on South Poplar Avenue in Pierre.
As of Saturday morning, the Red Cross has helped more than 20 people who are displaced. The volunteers provided financial assistance to help with emergency lodging and to meet immediate needs such as food, clothing and other essential items that may have been lost in the fire. Volunteers also distributed blankets, comfort kits, snacks and toys for the children affected.
Red Cross disaster assistance is free and available to all.
