Jean Rounds, the wife of South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds, underwent surgery Friday to remove a malignant tumor near her sciatic nerve. This was in the same spot where her sarcoma was located.
The tumor was found this week during a routine 90-day checkup at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
In a statement, Mike and Jean Rounds said, “As any family who has gone through a cancer diagnosis knows, post-treatment checkups are critical. While this is not the news we had hoped for, we are thankful the doctors discovered the malignancy at an early stage. Jean’s doctors are confident that the procedure will be a success. We continue to be grateful for the support and prayers of so many throughout this difficult time. Please keep the prayers coming!”
Jean was diagnosed with a sarcoma in May of 2019. She underwent six rounds of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the rest of that tumor and radiation treatment, which was completed in February.
