Based on September 1 conditions, South Dakota’s 2020 corn crop is forecast at a record 827 million bushels, up 48% from last year’s production, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 4.92 million acres, up 27% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 168 bushels per acre, a record high if realized, and up 24 bushels from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 247 million bushels, up 69% from last year. Acres for harvest, at 5.15 million acres, is up 50% from 2019. Yield is forecast at 48 bushels per acre, up 5.5 bushels from last year.
Sorghum production is forecast at 10.3 million bushels, down 26% from last year. Area for harvest, at 120,000 acres, is down 31% from 2019. Yield is forecast at a record high 86 bushels per acre if realized, up 6 bushels from last year.
Dry edible pea production is forecast at 551,000 cwt, up 67% from a year ago, and a record high if realized. Area for harvest, at 29,000 acres, is up 93% from 2019. Yield is forecast at 1,900 pounds per acre, down 300 pounds from last year.
