A bridge on Highway 14 between Harrold and Blunt now bears the name of a South Dakota soldier killed while serving in South Vietnam (Quang Ngai province).
At Wednesday’s (Oct. 14) bridge naming ceremony for Sgt. Daniel Busse of Highmore, South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Greg Whitlock said Busse was killed in hostile gunfire Sept. 1, 1968.
Whitlock presented Busse’s family with a symbol of appreciation.
Busse’s sister, Cheryl Fawcett, said Danny was known for his humor and easy going personality.
Busse also had three brothers—William, Jan and Steve.
Before he died, Busse had earned seven commendations. He was killed a few days before he would have turned 22 years old.
Naming bridges in honor of combat veterans who died while serving their country is a new initiative of Governor Kristi Noem and the South Dakota Departments of Military, Transportation and Veterans Affairs.
