With 71 precincts yet to be tallied, it looks like South Dakota voters have approved two ballot issues legalizing marijuana and legalizing sports wagering in Deadwood.
Supporters of Constitutional Amendment A and Initiated Measure 26 worked together to get both measures passed. IM26 legalizes medicinal marijuana and currently holds a 69% in favor to 31% against total. Amendment A legalizes the recreational use of marijuana for people age 21 years and older. It also requires the state legislature pass laws regarding hemp and laws ensuring access to marijuana for medical use. The winning margin was smaller for this issue, currently there’s a 53% yes to 47% no tally.
Constitutional Amendment B authorizes the state legislature to allow sports wagering in Deadwood. That cleared by a 59% to 41% difference.
Gary Hanson will keep his seat on the state Public Utilities Commission. Hanson had 69% of the vote. Challenger Remi W. B. Bald Eagle received 25% and Devin Saxon took 5%.
Justice Steven Jensen was also reelected. He’ll remain one of South Dakota’s five Supreme Court judges.
