Since the COVID-19 pandemic first showed up in the state about eight months ago, 536 South Dakotans have died from the virus.
Yesterday’s (Nov. 8, 2020) update from the state Department of Health shows over 100 of those deaths have been reported in the first eight days of this month (Nov.).
In South Dakota:
• currently active cases– 15,750
• currently hospitalized– 546
• total confirmed cases– 52,603
• total probable cases– 2801
• recovered cases– 39,118
• total deaths– 536
Coronavirus patients currently occupy 19.8% of the staffed hospital beds in the state. Other patients are using 44.6% of the staffed beds leaving 35.6% available. Of the staffed intensive care unit beds in the state, COVID-19 patients are using 31.8%, other patients occupy 33.8% and 34.4% are available to be used.

A confirmed case of COVID-19 is defined as persons with a positive RT-PCR test. A probable case is defined as persons with a positive antigen test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.
