PIERRE – The Pierre School District is moving to Tier 2 status for attendance at winter sporting events. This means that attendance will be limited and social distancing will be strongly encouraged. Adults are encouraged to wear masks.
For Georgia Morse Middle School, there will be unlimited tickets for basketball, but the gym will be cleared after each game. There are three games per date at home.
Four tickets per middle school wrestling athlete will be distributed. Middle school students can attend duals, but high school and elementary school students will need tickets to enter.
Gymnastics events in the administration gym will be limited to two tickets per athlete, and all students will require tickets to enter. For the gymnastics invitational on January 16, six tickets per athlete will be distributed. High school students will be allowed to end, but elementary and middle school students will need a ticket and must sit with their parents.
For basketball and wrestling at Riggs High, four tickets will be allotted to each rostered athlete. High school students will be allowed to attend. Elementary and middle school students will need a ticket and must sit with their parents.
Pierre Athletic Director Brian Moser discussed why the Tier 2 status was implemented.
Moser said that he is happy that no decision was made to pause winter sports.
Moser is part of a task force on safety for the SDHSAA. He was asked what advice or guidance on COVID-19 is being received from the medical members of the panel.
Moser feels that the plan now in place is the best one to keep sports going and fans attending.
Moser pointed out the one big thing that fans should do at Pierre sporting events.
